Perrin Technique
The Perrin Technique
The Perrin Technique™ is based on Dr Perrin’s theory that different stress factors whether physical (through postural problems or injury), environmental (exposure to toxins, moulds,) emotional (work, family), or an overworking immune system fighting an allergy or infections (viral, parasitic or bacterial), leads to an overstrain of the sympathetic nervous system due to a build up of toxins around the brain and spinal cord. These toxins are meant to drain down the spinal cord and out into the lymph ducts lying along the spine. However, in an ME/ CFS sufferer these normal drainage points are congested and the removal of toxins is hampered. Evidence has shown a backflow of drainage leading to a further build up of neurotoxins causing worsening breakdown of the brain’s normal functioning, which leads to a variety of debilitating and uncomfortable symptoms in addition to the overwhelming fatigue seen in ME/CFS sufferers.
Diagnosis
During 30 years of research into ME/CFS, Dr Perrin has developed a set of diagnostic criteria based on physical signs common to all ME/CFS sufferers. With these he has developed a physical examination enabling a diagnosis and score to be given. This score helps to monitor progress of the treatment and set expectations for recovery.
Treating using the Perrin Technique
The Perrin Technique treatment is an osteopathic method which stimulates the movement of fluid around the brain and spine. It consists of neurolymphatic drainage, improvement of spinal mechanics particularly in the upper back and cranio-sacral treatment.
It is a gentle treatment designed to aid the drainage of the toxins into the bloodstream where the body can eliminate the toxins or the liver can detoxify them. As the level of toxins reduces the body’s sympathetic nervous system returns to normal functioning, the symptoms improve and body returns to being able to self-regulate.

Getting Started
The initial appointment is approximately an hour and a half and involves an explanation of Dr Perrin’s theory of ME/CFS, a full case history and examination/assessment. Treatment sessions usually commence on a separate day and typically last 45 minutes per appointment.
Appointments start weekly for 12 weeks and then they are reassessed to monitor improvements. As progress is being made the appointments spread out to every 2 weeks, every 3 weeks, every 4 weeks, 3 monthly, 6 monthly, then annual checkups.
Everyone is different and progress can depend on how long you have been suffering and how well controlled the stress factors are in the patient’s life.
